"Modeling Galactic Outflows with Petascale Simulations"

Galactic outflows play a critical role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, as the expulsion of gas regulates the baryonic content of dwarf galaxies and likely explains the behavior of the faint end of the luminosity function. Using the CGOLS (Cholla Galactic OutfLow Simulations) suite of high-resolution isolated galaxy models, we examine how large-scale outflows from galaxies may develop from energy and momentum input on small scales. In modeling the multiphase character of the outflows, we demonstrate the viability of... Read more about ITC Colloquium - Brant Robertson (UCSC)

Title: Black Hole Mergers in Dense Stellar Systems

    Abstract:

I will present recent results on how binary black holes (BBHs)
merge in dense stellar systems through chaotic few-body interactions.
From taking into account GR effects in the equation-of-motion, I will show that dense stellar systems are likely to produce non-circular (eccentric) mergers in both LISA and LIGO with rates that are 10-100 times larger than all major groups recently have reported. This makes eccentricity a promising...

"Stellar Rejuvenation in Galactic Center and AGNs:  Analog of Planet Formation in Gravitational Wave Sources"

The prevalence of massive black holes and nuclear stellar clusters implies some stars may be trapped in accretion disks around active galactic nuclei.  We determine the star trapping rate and we show that the trapped stars rapidly accrete gas which leads to a top heavy initial mass function similar to that found in the Galactic Center. These massive stars undergo supernova explosion, pollute the accretion disks around high-redshift...

Title : r-process enrichment of the lightest galaxies by fast merging neutron star binaries

Abstract: The recent aLIGO/aVirgo discovery of the gravitational wave from the neutron star merger (NSM) GW170817,
and the follow up kilonova observations have shown that NSMs produce copious amount of r-process material.
Assuming neutron star mergers are the dominant sources of r-process elements in the universe,
we study the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and ultra faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies through a...

"Flow of diffuse gas in quiescent galactic centres"

Abstract: Recent observations probed the distribution of gas around our galactic centre, and tidal disruption events provide information about centres of other quiescent galaxies. Galactic centres are different from the remainder of the galaxy, in that gas is continuously supplied by young and massive stars. Most of that gas ends up outside the galactic centre, but a small...

Abstract: Exoplanet direct imaging and light curve inversion techniques could yield subcontinent-scale exoplanet maps suitable for bio- and techno-marker detection within 5 years. We just need to think differently about large telescopes. This discussion will describe...
