"The Formation of Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies from Passive Evolution in the RomulusC Galaxy Cluster Simulation"
Current cosmological simulations have so far been limited to studying the formation of ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in isolation, or with environmental effects applied artificially. Here I present the first self consistent prediction for the formation of UDGs in a galaxy cluster. With unprecedented resolution, the RomulusC cosmological simulation of a 10^14 Msun galaxy cluster is uniquely able to resolve cluster member galaxies down to 10^7 Msun in halos as small as 3e9 Msun, resulting in 79 UDGs within 1.5 R200 at z = 0. Following the quenching of star formation due to ram pressure removing their gas, dwarf galaxies passively evolve to become UDGs.
